Income Generating Projects: Livestock
Every sponsored child receive two goats (about $30 each) for their family to start a small income generating project with. The project has been a fortune for some of the families, though some of the families lost their goats due to an animal disease in 2008. This Christmas, we raised enough money to replenish the goats that had perished as well as buy new ones for the children who had not yet received any.
Cecilia got a goat that gave birth to 2 kids the first time and 4 kids the second time. The father is contemplating exchanging them for a big cow, which will be a source of milk for the family. William’s she goat gave birth, but the animal disease killed the mother goat, and the twin kids died shortly after. The surviving goat is expected to produce soon. Dorcus also lost some of her goats, but she now has two, and expecting to get more young ones soon. Isaiah’s animals have multiplied and the father is also considering getting a cow, which he says, is easier to look after instead of many goats.
Those of Philip and his sisters have also multiplied but they are also scared of the disease because many goats and cows in the neighbourhood have already died. Though Joshua is out of the programme, his ‘miracle’ goat produced 4 kids twice! The father has since exchange them for an in-calf cow. ‘Thanks for Helping Hands,’ the family always says.

Vocational Training: Tailoring
Beginning in September 2009, HHU funded one of the caregivers to attend a local tailoring school. She has now completed her program and will pass on her skills to three mothers in the project. The project will provide a sewing machine (about $130) for the new tailors to practice on and share. This will help them in saving up enough money to buy their own machines. Not only will these women greatly increase their earning potential; they will also become their own bosses.
This project was suggested by the caregivers themselves, and will be run by them.
